A More Beautiful Game

Pythagoras in Boots
I studied product design in college and Dutch design has always interested me. I hadn’t dedicated a detailed illustration to Johan Cruyff yet and It occurred to me that one of the the most famous Dutch products is the ‘Cruyff Turn’ which would in turn make Cruyff a designer himself. If I could infuse a print of him with some Dutch design principles this observation could come full circle. The Dutch have the ability to make fun of themselves and their work has a way of combining things that usually don’t combine at all. So here I tried to illustrate this by visually incorporating his nickname, Pythagoras in Boots, into his playing style.

World Cup Legends by Neil Stevens

“As the countdown to the World Cup in Brazil 2014 begins, I’ve created a handful of illustrative portraits of the legends of the tournament. These are the players who lit up the world with the performances at football’s biggest stage.

Here we have Maradona, Bobby Charlton, Pelé, Johan Cruyff, Gary Lineker and Michel Platini.”

This is only volume one. There are more legends coming. If there’s enough interest (nudge nudge), Neil’s going to make these available to purchase. You can find more of his excellent work here. [Posted by Eric]

Europe’s highest football pitch

While the beautiful game may be found at higher altitudes in Bolivia, there’s something special about this uncovered gem in Gspon, Switzerland.

Set in the heart of the Swiss alps, Ottmar Hitzfeld stadium is carved into a mountainside 2,000 meters (6,561 feet) above sea level… The field, surrounded by vertiginous peaks near the resort of Zermatt, was built on one of the few patches flat enough to hold it. There wasn’t enough room for a proper pitch, so the team plays on a three-quarter-size field akin to a five-a-side field. The turf is artificial, because grass won’t grow at this altitude. And because the village is too high for traffic, players arrive by cable car.”

Right, so how do we exchange our team bus for a team cable car?

Meanwhile in New York, the Cosmos make $400m plans

It’s no secret that the revamped New York Cosmos are hoping to make a splash as they return to professional soccer in the North American Soccer League (NASL) this August. It’s no secret that Major League Soccer wants its 20th team to be in Queens.

Today, the Cosmos launched a microsite with full details about their plan to privately fund a new 25k seat stadium in Belmont Park, almost on the border of Queens and Long Island. The proposed stadium hoping to open in 2016 is designed by Populous, the firm behind projects like the Emirates, Wembley, and the London 2012 Olympic Stadium. Questions are being raised as to whether or not the New York City area could even support 3 clubs, but before we get to 3 we need to get to 2. A fair share of drama lies ahead between the Cosmos and MLS, as does plenty of entertainment, but it’s reasonable to say that this could be an extravagant, exciting leap forward.

We’re only scratching the surface, so for more information here’s…

What’s your reaction? Full support, skepticism, or thinking this is general step forward for the sport in the States?
